Farmers can benefit from solar energy in several ways—by leasing farmland for solar; installing a solar system on a house, barn, or other building; or through agrivoltaics. Agrivoltaics is defined as agriculture, such as crop production, livestock grazing, and pollinator habitat, located underneath solar panels and/or between rows of solar panels.

Are solar farms affecting agricultural land cover & productivity?

With solar farms and wind turbines increasingly being built in rural areas, questions have emerged about the long-term consequences for agricultural land cover and productivity. One of the major conclusions from the USDA ERS study is that, despite concerns, most agricultural land near wind and solar developments has remained in agricultural use.
