How Sri Lanka is promoting solar energy?

The Sri Lankan Government and the Ministry of Power have launched some programs to promote this clean, renewable energy resource, solar, in collaboration with Sri Lankan sustainable energy authority. Soorya Bala Sangramaya is one of the most popular programs the Sri Lankan government launched to promote solar energy in Sri Lanka.

What is Solar Resource Atlas of Sri Lanka?

The Solar Resource Atlas of Sri Lanka is an important addition to the existing knowledge on solar resources of Sri Lanka. The first solar atlas of Sri Lanka was prepared by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of USA, in 2005, as the Wind and Solar Resource Atlas of Sri Lanka and Maldives.

How much solar energy does Sri Lanka generate?

According to the solar resource map created by NREL of the USA, the flat dry zone in Sri Lanka, which accounts for two-thirds of the land area, experiences solar radiation ranging from 4.0 to 4.5 kWh/m2/day. However, there are several factors that can influence the amount of electricity generated from solar panels installed in any given location.

How does Sri Lanka meet its energy needs?

Sri Lanka fulfills its current energy requirements through a combination of different energy sources, including locally available non-fossil fuels and imported fossil fuels. Most the country's energy needs are met through biomass, which is an indigenous source of fuel, and imported fossil fuels like coal and petroleum.
