Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) are regarded as viable alternatives to lithium-ion battery technology because of their high volumetric capacity, low cost, and the rich abundance of aluminum.

This seemingly simple change offers several significant advantages: first, removing the anode reduces the battery's weight and size, increasing overall energy density. This means a battery of the same size can store more energy, or a battery of the same capacity can be made smaller and lighter.
