What is an energy storage system?

An energy storage system (ESS) for electricity generation uses electricity (or some other energy source, such as solar-thermal energy) to charge an energy storage system or device, which is discharged to supply (generate) electricity when needed at desired levels and quality. ESSs provide a variety of services to support electric power grids.

Can electricity be stored on any scale?

Electricity cannot itself be stored on any scale, but it can be converted to other forms of energy which can be stored and later reconverted to electricity on demand. Storage systems for electricity include battery, flywheel, compressed air, and pumped hydro storage. Any systems are limited in the total amount of energy they can store.

Why do we need energy storage systems?

When you turn on a hairdryer in your home, somewhere, an electricity generation plant is turning up just a tiny bit to keep the grid in balance. Energy storage systems allow electricity to be stored—and then discharged—at the most strategic times.

Why is electricity storage important?

Depending on the extent to which it is deployed, electricity storage could help the utility grid operate more efficiently, reduce the likelihood of brownouts during peak demand, and allow for more renewable resources to be built and used.
