Does Rwanda have solar and wind potential?

Rwanda’s solar and wind potential was assessed as an input for energy scenario development. In this section, we assess the technical potential under space-constrained conditions. GIS mapping was used to ascertain Rwanda’s renewable energy resources (solar and wind).

How will renewables affect Rwanda's Energy Supply?

All three sectors will reduce fuel cost over time because electricity generation is based on renewables – with significant shares of solar and wind power. However, increased electrification will lead to higher investment costs in power generation and higher overall electricity supply costs for Rwanda.

How can Rwanda benefit from pumped hydro storage?

The utilisation of this potential by implementing additional water reservoir storage capacities and pumped hydro storage (PHS) facilities will put Rwanda in a comfortable position to integrate large amounts of variable solar PV and wind power generation.

Can Rwanda build a reliable electricity supply?

The energy sector analysis was conducted for Rwanda’s projected electricity demand and supply for 2030 and 2050 under the R-1.5°C pathway. It was found that Rwanda can cost-effectively build a reliable electricity supply based on local power generation with a high proportion of solar and wind power.
